The sight was remarkable: numerous cyclists donned the armband that was made available to them,’ noted Markus Ith, president of the organizing committee, in an interview with the Swiss public broadcaster RTS.
Before each race commenced, participants observed a minute’s silence. Additionally, certain festive events planned around the competition were cancelled.
According to Ith, there had never been any requests to cancel the event entirely. It was crucial to proceed both for the athletes who had trained extensively over months and as ‘a symbol of solidarity’ to ‘look forward’.
‘We want to show that sport is a vehicle for hope and unity. It should help us remember those who have passed away and also move on,’ he stated in yesterday’s edition of La Liberté, a local newspaper from Fribourg. This year’s event has seen more than 7500 registrations, exceeding last year’s numbers.
